IBM WebSphere Commerce V9
There is quite a bit of excitement around IBM’s recent WebSphere Commerce V9 release. With good reason as this release has a heavy focus on reducing operational costs while improving development flexibility and access to functional business applications. Also noteworthy is that IBM recently announced an extension for v7 through April 30, 2020.
At a high level, here’s what’s new:
Introduction of Docker containerization:
Allows organizations to create, deploy and run applications faster, reducing operations and support effort.
Utilization of microservice architecture:
Provides greater flexibility and scaling. For instance, the store server and search server have been decoupled from the larger transaction server.
Leverage light-weight open-source technology:
Customization of the brand and business user experiences are more efficient and cost-effective through the use of open-source technology in JPA and jQuery.

What’s containerization and Docker?
A container image is a lightweight, stand-alone, executable package of a piece of software that includes everything needed to run it: code, runtime, system tools, system libraries, settings. Containers isolate software from its surroundings, for example differences between development and staging environments and help reduce conflicts between teams running different software on the same infrastructure. https://www.docker.com/what-container#/package_software
Docker is a container platform provider. Docker containers and tooling enable organizations to build and ship applications dramatically easier and faster. https://www.docker.com/what-docker
Can I migrate from v7 directly to v9?
Yes. You can migrate from WebSphere Commerce Version 7 and 8 to WebSphere Commerce Version 9. If you have applied any WebSphere Commerce fix packs to your existing 7 and 8, migration from those code levels is supported.
Is it true that WebSphere Commerce v9 store front has been decoupled from core?
Yes. The store front is delivered in a separate Docker image so that you can deploy, scale and manage it outside of the core transaction server.
Does v9 include developer licenses?
Yes! You no longer have to pay for individual developer licenses, a big cost savings for most organizations.
